Essential Oils to relieve anxiety

During times like this, of instability and uncertainty we can easily feel anxious and even begin to feel panic, but it’s so important to keep calm and take precaution to prevent getting into these state of mind. Now that we are all home waiting for the storm to pass, is an ideal time to put into practice all of those little things we “never have time” to do. We can try deep home cleaning, begin exercising, cook and learn new recipes, and also one of my favorites: learn how to use essential oils to release anxiety. When we inhale certain essential oils we send signals to our limbic system in our brain which is the region in charge of our emotions.

Before I begin to tell you about these essential oils, I want to explain the best way to use them. If you have a diffuser, you can add five to ten drops of essential oil and use it for 30 minutes to one hour everyday. If you have a spray bottle, you can mix around twenty drops of essential oil to water and spray around your home. Lastly, you can also create your own body oil with just a few drops of your favorite essential oil tot a carrier oil like jojoba, almond, olive or coconut oil.

It’s important to know that essential oils are very potent, so diluting them is important before using them. If you use one drop of essential oil you should dilute it to one spoon of carrier oil.  Plus, during times like this where we must wash our hands as much as possible it would be good  to keep in mind to also moisturize your skin more than normal.  Please remember essential oils should be used externally only.

Great! Now that we know how to use essential oils, I will talk about my favorites to release anxiety.

Lavender: Lavender helps you to relax,  and it has become a very popular essential oil due to its highly calming effects and its beautiful aroma.  It is known for reducing levels of anxiety, stress, depression, and headaches. This oil has sedative effects that can help so much in times like this where we tend to be a bit more nervous and anxious. The fragrance is delicate and just  sensing the aroma you can begin to feel more relaxed.

Roman Chamomile: The same way we drink a warm cup of chamomile tea to wine down and relax, we can use the oil topically, due to its calming properties. Roman chamomile is one of my favorite oils to use at night time because it really soothes the mind just before bed. The aroma is sweet and floral, and it can also be combined with lavender oil.

Geranium: This essential oil is often used in cosmetics and perfumes for its fresh and floral scent, but it is also used for its ability to reduce anxiety. Geranium essential oil promotes emotional balance in situations where we have no control. It is also used to lift you up!

Remember that sometimes in life things happen which aren’t under our control, but what we can control is the way we react when they happen.

If you are pregnant it is best to consult with your physician before using any essential oils.
